AN AMERICAN IN PARIS from WNYC’s “Selected Shorts” Excerpts from three memories of Paris by American icons—Charles Lindberg, Ernest Hemingway, and Isadora Duncan.

First, an excerpt from Lindbergh’s memoir THE SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS, in which he describes the final hours of his epic pioneering transatlantic flight, coming in at night with his gas tanks nearing empty, searching for the lights of Paris and the runways of Le Bourget airport.

Second, Hemingway’s A MOVEABLE FEAST captures the Paris of literature, love, and picturesque poverty. This excerpt recalls the charm of the famous bookstore Shakespeare & Company, cheap French meals, and love in the afternoon.

Third, Isadora Duncan’s memoir of Paris at the start of her career; romancing several beaus and beginning to create the luminous persona that would make her the toast of more than one capital.
