Two weeks spent exploring the slickrock benches and verdant canyons of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

  • Jacob Hamlin Arch (hidden) perforates the center fin, seen here from beneath the alcove at the bend in the oxbow
  • Jacob Hamlin Arch as seen from downstream
For most of us, Jacob Hamlin Arch was the end of the line for the day; some napped while others explored a little farther down Hurricane Wash before heading back upstream to our shortcut, and back out the slickrock to the trailhead near Chimney Rock.

  • Heading back upstream past Jacob Hamlin Arch
  • Deep in the canyon, we'd missed the afternoon's spectacular sky-show
  • Between the foreground and Navajo Mt in the background is unseen Lake Powell
