Bicycle Touring India

Our cycle tour of India starting in December 2009, beginning with Delhi, Agra and a loop around Rajasthan.

From Udaipur we took the train south to Mumbai, then continued cycling along the coast from Ratnagiri through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.

We took a break in Cochin, then had a final push through Kerala and into Tamil Nadu to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian Subcontinent.  Our tour wound up with a few weeks in the Andaman Islands.

From Udaipur we took the train to Mumbai, and spent a week seeing the sights there including the fantastic Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.   After a side trip by train and bus to the Ajanta and Ellora Cave complexes we shuttled out of Mumbai down the coast a couple of hundred km by train to Ratnagiri.

From Ratnagiri we cycled along the coast of Maharashtra, through Goa and into Karnataka, up into the hills of the Western Ghats and back down along the coast through the Kerala backwaters region.  In April we finally reached our destination of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, at the southernmost tip of the subcontinent.   We took liberal breaks on this coastal section for hanging out at some of the great beaches we found along the way.

After a recovery period in Cochin, we flew off for a last bit of cycling, snorkeling and hanging out at the beach in the Andaman Islands.  Getting to, from, and around the islands with our bikes was a bit more effort than we had bargained for at this stage in our trip; a relaxing "beach hang" it was not, but we're glad we got to see and explore some of this remote indian outpost by bike.
